The Sierra Club Endorses the Re-election of Delegate Alfonso Lopez

Cites Lopez’s commitment and effectiveness as an advocate for environmental issues in Richmond

(Arlington, VA) The Virginia Chapter of the Sierra Club has endorsed the re-election of Delegate Alfonso Lopez for the 49^th District of the Virginia House of Delegates. With over 17,000 members across the Commonwealth, the Virginia Chapter of the Sierra Club works to build healthy, livable communities, and to conserve and restore Virginia’s natural environment.

“In his first term in the House of Delegates, Delegate Lopez has been a committed advocate for the environment in the General Assembly” said Glen Besa, Virginia Senior Chapter Director of the Sierra Club. “Delegate Lopez has been extraordinarily effective in reaching across party lines and working to educate legislators about the environmental consequences of their legislation. We need more passionate and knowledgeable legislators like Delegate Lopez to advocate for environmental issues in Richmond.”

Over his first two years in the General Assembly, Delegate Lopez has passed legislation to make it easier to drive cleaner and more energy efficient vehicles in Virginia and helped pass legislation to require new green standards for Virginia’s public buildings. He has also introduced legislation to reform Virginia’s Renewable Portfolio Standards program, remove roadblocks to the creation of new renewable energy utility facilities, and create incentives for the purchase of renewable energy technology in Virginia. In addition, he has fought to keep the ban on uranium mining in Virginia, strengthen the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, and encourage land preservation throughout the Commonwealth.

Alfonso Lopez is a Member of the Virginia General Assembly, representing the 49^th District in the House of Delegates. With over 20 years of legislative experience at the highest levels of federal and state government as well as a record of achievement in our community, he has dedicated his life to public service and Virginia.
