January 23, 2014 Delegate Lopez's statement on Attorney General Herring's decision
to not defend Virginia's same sex marriage ban

"I commend Attorney General Herring for defending the rights of LGBT Virginians and ensuring that Virginia moves forward on the right side of history. Virginia's ban on marriage equality is indefensible discrimination - plain and simple.
We need to make sure the Commonwealth is accepting of all people regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Attorney General Herring has taken this critical first step, but we need to keep moving forward to end discrimination in housing and the workplace for all LGBT Virginians.
As the sponsor of legislation to end housing discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation, I am hopeful that Attorney General Herring's announcement today will give us momentum to end this type of discrimination in Virginia once and for all. With LGBT youth twice as likely to be homeless and LGBT couples experiencing higher rates of housing discrimination, this is an issue the General Assembly needs to address this year."
