Delegate Lopez Appointed to Employment Retirement Security & Pension Reform Commission
ARLINGTON, Va. — This week, Delegate Alfonso Lopez (D-Arlington) announced that he had been appointed to the Virginia Commission on Employee Retirement Security and Pension Reform. The Commission reports to the General Assembly and is responsible for studying and making recommendations on issues related to employee retirement policies, the current Commonwealth retirement system plan, design and benefits packages, Virginia’s changing state workforce, and state employee compensation.
“Our state employees are the backbone of the Commonwealth, working day and night to do everything from processing driver’s licenses to making that sure our communities remain safe during natural disasters,” said Delegate Lopez. “A robust state retirement system is critical to attracting qualified and experienced employees and I’m glad to have this opportunity to continue fighting for the benefits and pensions that our state employees deserve. I look forward to working with the rest of Commission as we consider ways to protect the rights of state employees and ensure the continued health of our retirement system for years to come.”
Lopez was appointed to the Commission by Speaker Kirk Cox, who by law is permitted to appoint up to three members of the House of Delegates. The Commission was established in 2016 through legislation introduced by then-Speaker William J. Howell.
